Nederlander waakt over Tom Clancy IP
Michiel Verheijdt, voormalig marketing manager bij de Nederlandse tak van Ubisoft, heeft een opmerkelijke carrière move gemaakt. Voor hetzelfde Ubisoft, maar nu in een nieuw opgezet filiaal in Luxemburg, beheert hij sinds kort als IP developer het gehele Tom Clancy gamesuniversum. “Ik moet een halve wikipedia vol schrijven om alles te indexeren.”
Twee jaar geleden kocht Ubisoft alle rechten op de Tom Clancy naam af. Hoeveel geld daar mee gemoeid was, is niet precies bekend maar denk aan een getal met zeven nullen. Voor dat geld mag het Franse bedrijf zelf bepalen wat het doet met de speciaal voor games ontwikkelde titels als Rainbow Six, Splinter Cell en End War. Of het nou om nog meer games gaat, of boeken, speelgoed, comics of speelfilms, Ubisoft betaalt de schrijver geen royalties meer.

Het beheren van deze goudmijn (Tom Clancy is het meest lucratieve IP van Ubisoft) is een mooie klus voor Clancy-fan Verheijdt: “Die spellen hadden altijd mijn speciale aandacht. De sfeer is onovertroffen, altijd op het scherpst van de snede. Stuk voor stuk spannende verhalen waarin je met futuristische technologie aan de gang gaat.” Dat hij reageerde op een interne vacature voor IP developer kwam voor weinigen binnen Ubisoft als een verrassing: “Ik heb vrijwel alles van hem gelezen en zeker alles gespeeld. De liefde voor deze brand was ook op het hoofdkantoor bekend.”

Verheijdt kreeg de baan en werd daarmee op slag de belangrijkste persoon voor veel studio’s die aan Tom Clancy-games werken. Alle verhaallijnen, gebeurtenissen en personages moeten namelijk consistent zijn met de wereld zoals hij inmiddels in talloze games, boeken en films is vastgelegd. Een van de grootste klussen van Verheijdt is dan ook het maken van een style guide, of liever gezegd een Clancy Bible: “Ik moet een halve wikipedia volschrijven om alles te indexeren. Het is cruciaal dat we alles helder op een rijtje hebben, want we willen in de toekomst de verschillende gameseries elkaar laten overlappen. Yep, ‘convergence’ is het toverwoord hier.”
Andere mindset
Met deze stap komt Verheijdt opeens heel dicht bij de development van nieuwe games te staan: “Ik zat voorheen helemaal aan het eind van de rit. Je hebt als marketing- of product manager helemaal niks te vertellen over de inhoud van de game, jouw taak is hem aan de man te brengen.” Nu is hij in constant overleg met developers en schrijvers. “Het vergt een andere mindset om te dealen met developers. Ze hebben vaak wilde plannen en ideeën en ik kijk of het kan, of het past. Op dit moment ben ik bezig met twee Tom Clancy games die net in development zijn. Ik mag daar niks over zeggen anders moet ik Sam Fisher op je af sturen.”
